The Most Important Decision You Will Make
Choosing a plastic surgeon is not like choosing a hair stylist. You are selecting a medical professional to perform a major operation on your body. The results—and the safety profile—depend heavily on the skill and judgment of the surgeon you choose.
The "Board Certified" Confusion
Be careful. Any doctor with a medical license can legally perform cosmetic surgery. To ensure they are specifically trained in plastic surgery, look for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). This is the gold standard.
Step 1: The Credentials Check
Before you even look at photos, verify the basics:
- ABPS Certification: Verify on the ABPS website.
- State Medical Board: Check for any disciplinary actions or malpractice claims in Nevada (or your state).
- Hospital Privileges: Even if you are having surgery in a private center, having hospital privileges means the surgeon has been vetted by a hospital committee.
Step 2: Decoding Before & After Photos
Photos are your best evidence of a surgeon's aesthetic style. But you need to look closer:
Consistency
Do they have 3 great results or 30? You want to see consistent quality across many patients.
Similar Body Types
Look for patients who looked like you before surgery. If you have stretch marks or loose skin, see how they handled that.
Scar Placement
Are the scars low and symmetrical? Or are they high and uneven?
Lighting & Pose
Watch out for tricks. Good photos have the same lighting, background, and pose in before and afters.
Step 3: Reading Reviews (The Right Way)
Online reviews can be helpful, but take them with a grain of salt. Look for patterns:
- Green Flags: Mentions of the surgeon being "caring," "meticulous," or "available." Positive comments about the staff are also a good sign.
- Red Flags: Recurring complaints about "rudeness," "ignoring complications," or "hidden fees."
Step 4: The Consultation
This is your interview. See our Consultation Checklist for exactly what to ask.
Trust Your Gut: If you feel rushed, pressured, or unheard, walk away. The right surgeon will make you feel safe, respected, and confident.
