It Is Not Just Physical
We prepare our homes with recovery supplies and our bodies with vitamins, but we often forget to prepare our minds. A tummy tuck is a major life event. It changes how you see yourself. It is normal to feel a whirlwind of emotions before and after surgery.
"Many women feel guilty for spending the money, then scared they are being vain. But looking back, prioritizing themselves makes them happier moms and partners."
Common Pre-Op Emotions
-
1
Guilt
You might wonder if you should be spending this on your family instead. Remember: You can't pour from an empty cup. Reclaiming your confidence is a valid need.
-
2
Fear
Fear of anesthesia or pain is universal. Discuss these openly with your surgeon; knowledge conquers fear.
-
3
Excitement
Allow yourself to daydream about fitting into those jeans or feeling comfortable in a swimsuit!
The "Post-Op Blues"
About 3-5 days after surgery, many patients hit a wall. You're tired, uncomfortable, and haven't seen the results yet due to swelling. This is a known physiological reaction to surgery and anesthesia.
How to Cope:
- Have a "Feel Good" Playlist: audiobooks, favorite movies, or soothing music.
- Limit Social Media: Don't compare your Day 3 bloat to someone's Month 6 highlight reel.
- Journal: Write down your "Why." Why did you do this? Read it when you feel low.
Support Systems Matter
You need a cheerleader. Whether it's a partner, a mom, or a best friend, designate someone to be your emotional support, not just your nurse. Tell them beforehand: "I might get grumpy or sad. Please remind me it's temporary."
